Water temperatures are crucial for horseshoe crab spawning and crab eggs are critical for migrating shorebirds. If the water falls below 59 degrees, the crabs don't come ashore to spawn. When that happens, as occurred recently, Black Back and Herring Gull that feed on horseshoe crab eggs and overturned crabs start eating shorebirds. By the end of Thursday (May 19) we found 8 dead red knots. Learn more.
